The complete Mahabharata from Vyasa’s Sanskrit, retold in simple Telugu, with the key shlokas in both Devanagari and Telugu script.
Most of us know the Mahabharata from television, Harikatha and retellings. This edition goes back to the source: the Critical Edition (పరిష్కృత ప్రతి), the scholarly text prepared over nearly fifty years at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune, from more than a thousand manuscripts. It follows Vyasa’s order of events and marks clearly which well-loved details come from Vyasa and which were added later.
Language: The story is in Telugu. Every shloka is printed in Devanagari and in Telugu script, so you can recite it even if you don’t read Devanagari. Each has a Telugu meaning (తాత్పర్యం) and an English meaning. Section titles are in Telugu and English.

Why this edition
- Every verse is quoted directly from the Critical Edition, and every event is checked against it. The Telugu has been proofread.
- Clear Telugu script, in which every conjunct renders correctly. Shlokas are printed in both scripts.
- “వ్యాసుడు ఏమంటారు” notes cover details often told differently today. In the Critical Edition, Ganesha does not write down the epic, and at Draupadi’s svayamvara there is no fish.
- Honest about the epic’s hardest questions: Draupadi’s question, Karna’s loyalty, Dharmaraja’s half-truth.
- An evergreen edition, with no dates that go out of date.
