The Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatam is the hymn sung every morning before dawn at Tirumala to wake Lord Venkateswara, the Lord of the Seven Hills. It has four parts and 70 verses: the Suprabhatam (29 verses), the Stotram (11), the Prapatti (16) and the Mangalashasanam (14). It was composed in the 15th century by Prativadi Bhayankaram Annan, a disciple of the Sri Vaishnava teacher Manavala Mamunigal, and it opens with a verse from the Valmiki Ramayana, Kausalya supraja Rama.
The four parts of the Suprabhatam
| Part | Verses | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Suprabhatam | 29 | Wakes the Lord, describing the dawn at Tirumala and the gods, sages and birds waiting to see him |
| Stotram | 11 | Praises the Lord's form and glory |
| Prapatti | 16 | Surrender: taking refuge at the Lord's feet, through Goddess Lakshmi |
| Mangalashasanam | 14 | Blessings: wishing auspiciousness to the Lord |
Together they move from waking, to praise, to surrender, to blessing. That arc is why the full hymn feels complete when recited in order.
What does "Kausalya supraja Rama" mean?
The opening verse is taken from the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, where the sage Vishwamitra wakes the young Rama in the forest:
Kausalya supraja Rama purva sandhya pravartate
Uttishtha narashardula kartavyam daivam ahnikam
Meaning: "O Rama, noble son of Kausalya, the dawn is breaking in the east. Rise, O tiger among men; the day's sacred duties must be done." The composer begins with Rama because Venkateswara is worshipped as the same Vishnu, and the very next verse calls on Govinda and the Lord of Garuda to rise.
How the Suprabhatam is sung at Tirumala
The Suprabhatam seva is the first ritual of the day at the Tirumala temple, performed before dawn as the sanctum doors open. Devotees can attend it through the temple's seva booking. Across South India and beyond, millions of homes play or recite the Suprabhatam at dawn, a habit that became widespread through the celebrated recording by M. S. Subbulakshmi.
How to recite it at home
- When: early morning, ideally before or at sunrise. Saturdays, which are especially sacred to Venkateswara, are a good day to begin.
- How long: about 20 to 25 minutes for all four parts.
- Setting: light a lamp before an image of Venkateswara (or Vishnu), offer a flower or tulsi leaf, and sit facing east.
- If you're new: start with the Suprabhatam alone, reading a few verses with their meaning each day. Add the other parts as you grow familiar.
- Close with Govinda Namalu or a simple "Om Namo Venkatesaya".
A simple Saturday puja
- Bathe and clean the puja space; light a ghee lamp.
- Offer flowers, tulsi and a namam (the U-shaped tilak) to the image.
- Recite the Suprabhatam, or play it while you offer.
- Offer a simple naivedyam, such as sweet pongal, curd rice or a laddu.
- End with aarti and Govinda Namalu, and share the prasad.
Many families also keep a small hundi box at home and add an offering each Saturday, to be given at Tirumala on their next visit.
