To use a habit tracker, pick 3 to 5 habits, write them down the left side of a monthly grid, tick or colour a box each day you do each one, and review the month at the end. Make each habit small and specific ("read 10 pages", not "read more"), attach it to something you already do every day, and don't break the chain two days in a row. Expect it to take about two months, not 21 days, before a habit feels automatic.
How long does it take to form a habit?
The popular "21 days" figure isn't backed by research. In a 2009 study at University College London, Phillippa Lally and colleagues followed 96 volunteers building a new daily habit. The time to reach automaticity varied from 18 to 254 days, with a median of 66 days. Simpler habits (drinking water with lunch) formed faster than harder ones (50 sit-ups before breakfast). They also found that missing a single day did not significantly affect the process, so one slip is no reason to quit.
How to use a habit tracker in 5 steps
- Choose a few habits. Start with 3 to 5. You can track more later; a tracker full of empty boxes is discouraging.
- Make each one small and measurable. "Walk 20 minutes", "No phone in bed", "Save ₹100". You should know at night whether you did it.
- Write why it matters. One line per habit, for the days motivation runs out.
- Tick it the moment you finish. Keep the tracker where you'll see it: on your desk, fridge or first page in GoodNotes.
- Review monthly. Total each row. Which habit stuck? Which was hardest, and what got in the way? Keep, shrink or swap habits for next month.
Habit stacking
Habit stacking, a technique popularised by BJ Fogg and James Clear, attaches a new habit to one you already do automatically, using the formula "After I ___, I will ___." For example:
- After I pour my morning chai, I will write three lines in my journal.
- After I brush my teeth at night, I will plan tomorrow's top three tasks.
- After I park at the office, I will take the stairs.
- After I receive my salary SMS, I will move my savings to a separate account.
Don't break the chain, but plan for breaks
- Never miss twice. One missed day is normal; two starts a new pattern.
- Have a minimum version. On a bad day, "1 page" still counts for "read 10 pages".
- Try a 30-day challenge for one to three habits you want to kick-start, then move them into your monthly tracker.
