Durga Saptashati: How Long It Takes to Read, the Best Time, and Can You Read It at Night? (Navratri 2026)

Reading the complete Durga Saptashati takes roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours in one sitting for a steady reader, including the Kavach, Argala and Kilak. First-time readers usually take longer, which is why most families split it across Navratri using a 3-day or 7-day plan. The best time is the morning after bathing, or the evening after lighting the lamp, and reading at night during Navratri is also an accepted practice. Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday 11 October to Monday 19 October.

How long does it take to read the Durga Saptashati?

The text has 13 chapters. Chapter lengths vary a lot: chapter 1 is long, chapter 4 is short, and chapters 5 to 13 (the final charitra) together make up more than half the book. That is why reading time is uneven from day to day in the 7-day plan.

  • Full path in one sitting: roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours with the opening hymns.
  • Kavach, Argala and Kilak alone: roughly 15 to 25 minutes.
  • One charitra a day (3-day plan): the third day is the longest.
  • Reading in your own language (meaning only): faster, often under 2 hours.

These are estimates from typical reading speeds, not fixed rules. Reading slowly and correctly matters more than finishing quickly.

What is the best time to read it?

Most families read in the morning, after bathing, in front of the kalash or the Goddess's picture, with a lamp lit. The evening, after the aarti lamp is lit, is the second common choice. If you are following a 7-day plan, try to read at the same time each day; the habit helps more than the exact hour.

Can you read the Durga Saptashati at night?

Yes. Navratri literally means "nine nights", and reading the Saptashati after sunset is common, especially for people who work during the day. Many readers also include the Ratri Suktam (the hymn to the Goddess as Night) before the chapters. If your family or guru follows a specific rule about timing, follow that.

Simple rules most families follow

  1. Bathe and sit on a clean asana facing east or north.
  2. Light a lamp and take a short sankalp (state why you are reading).
  3. Read the Kavach, Argala and Kilak first.
  4. Do not stop in the middle of a chapter; finish the chapter before you pause.
  5. End with the Kshama Prarthana, asking forgiveness for any mistakes.

If you can't read Sanskrit fluently, that is fine. Read slowly from clear transliteration, and read the meaning alongside.
