Self-Discovery Journal Prompts: Find Your Core Values, Use the Wheel of Life and Write Your Life Vision

Printable self discovery journal with guided prompts

Self-discovery journaling works best in a set order: first identify your core values, then answer prompts about who you are, your past, your strengths and fears, and your relationships, then rate the areas of your life on a wheel of life, and finally write a life vision. Go one section at a time, write freely without judging your answers, and revisit your values and vision every few months, because they change as you do.

Step 1: Find your core values

Read this list and circle the words that feel most like you:

Adventure · Authenticity · Balance · Compassion · Creativity · Curiosity · Faith · Family · Freedom · Growth · Health · Honesty · Humour · Independence · Justice · Kindness · Knowledge · Leadership · Love · Loyalty · Peace · Respect · Security · Simplicity · Spirituality · Stability · Success · Wealth · Wisdom

Narrow it down to your top five. For each, write how you already live it, and where your days don't match it yet. Those gaps often explain why something feels "off".

Step 2: Guided self-discovery prompts

Who am I?

  • How would my closest friends describe me?
  • What do I love doing so much that I lose track of time?
  • When do I feel most alive?
  • What do people often come to me for?

My past

  • What childhood memory shaped me the most?
  • What did I believe about myself as a child?
  • What would I tell my 15-year-old self?
  • What patterns keep repeating in my life?

Strengths and fears

  • What are my three biggest strengths?
  • What am I afraid of, really?
  • When have I been braver than I expected?
  • What would I try if I couldn't fail?

Relationships

  • What do I need in a friendship?
  • How do I show love? How do I like to receive it?
  • Which relationships drain me, and which energise me?

Dreams and future

  • What does my ideal ordinary day look like?
  • What do I want to be remembered for?
  • Where do I want to be in 5 years?
  • What small step can I take this week toward the life I want?

Step 3: The wheel of life

Rate each area from 1 to 10 for how satisfied you feel right now:

Area Example score
Career 7
Finances 5
Health 4
Relationships 8
Personal growth 6
Fun & leisure 3
Environment (home, surroundings) 6
Purpose 5

Don't try to fix everything. Pick the one area that would make the biggest difference if it improved (in this example, perhaps fun or health), and write one first step.

Step 4: Write your life vision

Describe, in a few lines each, the life you want personally, in your career, in your relationships and in your health. Then write a short letter from your future self, five years from now, telling you what mattered most along the way.

How often to revisit

  • Prompts: whenever you have 15 quiet minutes, one section at a time.
  • Wheel of life: every three to six months, to see what has shifted.
  • Core values and life vision: before big decisions such as a job change, a move or a relationship step.
